We knew todays game was going to be hard after we beat Blyth recently in the league and this was certainly the case.
Blyth are a quality team and their squad was tested to the full with some players out with a virus.Blyth started the game well putting us under pressure for the first 10 mins without ever creating any chances then we slowly started getting back into the game.
Today was one of those games where we didnt have the luck, the referee, who had a good game, missed a 2-handed push on Ross in the penalty area,a certain penalty then in the scramble Liam was adjudged to have a high foot on the keeper when he hooked the ball into the net.
This lead to long pressure on the Blyth defence but we were unable to make it count. This was when we pressed the self destruct button again.
Liam, who otherwise had an excellent game, was sloppy putting in a short backpass in to Craig our GK,but the Blyth CF ,to his credit, read this and nipped in ,coolly slotting the ball away to score. This was Blyth's only real chance of the game, and we were 1-0 down.
We didnt let our heads drop and continued to push forward creating a great chance when Danny forced the ball past the keeper who managed to hang on to it although he later told Danny that it did cross the line. The referee, to be fair, could not have seen this from his angle, so he couldnt give the goal.
2nd half was a level game again although we again created the chances but could not finish, John was put through with a 1 on 1 with the keeper, but couldnt find a way past him when he pulled off a terrific save, further more Ross had a shot saved by the keeper, and the rebound Jamie had his shot cleared off the line. It wasnt going to be our day.
We pushed and pushed but could not get the goal we deserved, but fair play to Blyth in a very even game they scored and we didnt.
I cannot remember a game between our 2 teams that wasnt a close encounter, and best of luck to Blyth in the next round.
Next game is our extremely tough away game v Kingston Park in the Divisional Cup semis. We need to play well again, and maybe have that bit of luck that deserted us today....fingers crossed.
